Colombia secured the final place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after defeating Ghana 1-0 in their Round of 32 clash on Friday.
Jhon Arias scored the only goal of the match in the 14th minute, finishing from close range after a cross from substitute Luis Suarez. The South Americans dominated proceedings throughout the encounter, creating numerous scoring opportunities but failing to extend their lead.
Ghana started brightly, with Thomas Partey firing narrowly wide in the opening minute, but the Black Stars struggled to threaten afterwards and failed to register a single shot on target during the game.
Both teams were forced into early substitutions due to injuries. Colombia lost Jhon Cordoba before Luis Suarez came on, while Ghana replaced the injured Marvin Senaya with Alidu Seidu.
Colombia continued to control possession and create chances, with Luis Diaz missing several opportunities despite an impressive performance that earned him the Man of the Match award. Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi also made a series of important saves to keep his side in the contest.
Despite wasting several chances in the second half, Colombia held on for the victory and will now face Switzerland in the Round of 16 in Vancouver on Tuesday.
After the match, Diaz admitted Colombia need to be more clinical in front of goal but praised his team's overall display, saying they are improving with each game despite missed opportunities.
