Real Madrid have confirmed the appointment of José Mourinho as their new head coach on a three-year deal, bringing the experienced Portuguese manager back to the Santiago Bernabéu after more than ten years away.
The announcement is expected to become fully official after the club’s presidential election set for June 7. Mourinho will succeed interim manager Álvaro Arbeloa, who had been handling first-team duties since January following Xabi Alonso’s exit.
His return comes in the wake of a disappointing 2025/26 season for Madrid, where the club failed to win any major silverware. Domestic rivals Barcelona secured the La Liga title, while Bayern Munich ended Madrid’s UEFA Champions League run at the quarter-final stage.
Mourinho, now 63, joins from Portuguese side Benfica after a brief spell that ended with a third-place league finish. This will be his second time in charge of Real Madrid, having previously managed the club between 2010 and 2013.
During his first spell, he delivered several major trophies, including La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup, while also famously ending Barcelona’s dominance in Spanish football with a record-breaking 100-point league campaign in 2011/12.
Since leaving Madrid in 2013, Mourinho has coached several elite European teams such as Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Roma, and Fenerbahçe, collecting both domestic and continental honors.
The club is now expected to enter a new rebuilding phase, with hopes that Mourinho’s experience and winning mentality will help restore Madrid’s dominance in Spain and Europe.
