Atlético Madrid produced a spirited second-half comeback to claim a 3–2 victory over Athletic Club in an action-packed La Liga encounter on Saturday.
Athletic Club made the brighter start and took an early lead, showing greater control and attacking intent during the opening stages. Their pressure paid off before halftime as they broke the deadlock, leaving the home crowd stunned and Atlético searching for answers.
After the break, however, Atlético Madrid returned with renewed energy. Antoine Griezmann restored parity with a well-taken goal, igniting the comeback and shifting momentum in favour of the hosts.
The turnaround was completed soon after when Alexander Sørloth found the net to put Atlético ahead. The Norwegian forward continued to trouble the visitors’ defence and later added his second goal in stoppage time, giving Atlético what appeared to be a comfortable cushion.
Athletic Club mounted a late push and pulled one goal back through Gorka Guruzeta deep into added time, but the effort came too late to deny Atlético all three points.
The victory provides a timely boost for Atlético Madrid as they look to build momentum in the closing stages of the season, while Athletic Club will be left to reflect on missed opportunities after a strong first-half display.
